Impressions from the Book

Following their successful publications on Währing, Ottakring, and Meidling, the two authors now turn their attention to Leopoldstadt. As always, advertiser Haitszinger and photographer Prokop were accompanied only by their camera and notebook. Just like in their previous works, their goal was to capture lived experiences in unforgettable visual worlds and to wrap their encounters with people into short, emotional stories.

Take a ride with them on the world-famous Ferris wheel or enjoy the booths and carousels of the Wurstelprater. Delight in art under the open sky or in the showcases of well-known or hidden exhibition spaces in the Second District. Peer through the telescopes of the planetarium into the urban future of our city. Here, where educational institutions and temples of euphoria line up, where modern urban development and Gründerzeit architecture reflect peacefully in the glass facades of global corporations, the stream of themes pouring out of the Second seems endless and inexhaustible. In every direction, Leopoldstadt reveals a different face—bustling markets, cheerful playgrounds by the waterways, or deep relaxation on lush meadows in former imperial hunting grounds.

The Author Team

Michael Haitszinger is an advertiser and copywriter who has spent his entire life in this unique city. As a “native,” as he calls himself, he loves the people, their language, and their warmth—especially because it sometimes needs to be gently coaxed out from beneath the urban shell of Vienna’s residents. “I love our openness, our humor, and our slight tendency toward the morbid. Our grumbling is unmatched, and I find it unique how we carry our Viennese wit into the world in such a clumsy yet loving way.”

Together with his book partner Klaus Prokop, Haitszinger has now taken a closer look at Leopoldstadt with “zehnzwanzig.” Once again, they bring the beauty of this city to the forefront and invite readers to take part.

The Viennese professional photographer once again embraced wonderful shoots, stunning photo series, and emotional moments in the Second District. Armed to the teeth with all kinds of photo equipment, he captured thousands of images at countless locations.

And at every imaginable time of year and day. Whether in peaceful nature, joyful exuberance, or breathtaking scenery—Prokop savored every single moment. A total of 308 images made it into the book, whose vibrant colors and meaningful messages can now be admired. And perhaps some readers will even set out to find the original locations where all these photos were taken.
